Design: Industrial Glam Decor

This year it seems that a lot more of us are experimenting with design. A popular style Ive been seeing more of is a little bit rustic and a little bit glam, also known as industrial glam.

Below are a few photos of industrial-glam interiors and accents pieces to help get you started on this chic design style. Enjoy!

This sparse industrial loft layout is very chic and glamorous. Not sure if Im liking the bold pink accents in this space but the lush velvet textiles are a nice contrast with the distressed wood floors and metal stairs, helps tone down the masculine look with the pink velvet sofa, throw pillows and pink coffee table.

The bed frame is made from scaffolding which is a cool alternative to try if youre interested in designing your own bed frame. Also the chandelier is made out of chain mail which helps create an edgy look in this bedroom. I like the pink and gray color combination, a nice mix if youre going for a feminine and modern feel.

Now this is a great looking kitchen! Im especially drawn to the reclaimed wood island with the contrast of the white counter-top, looks absolutely stunning. Also, the different shades in the wood in the island gives even more character in this space.

I have always liked the mix of exposed brick, darker woods with modern light fixtures. However, sometimes the industrial look can come off as masculine, it can be a design turn-off to some. So, try incorporating a few accessories such as throw pillows or a decorative throw to give it more hints of feminine touch to your home. You will still get the industrial feel, but also achieve a cozy, chic and glamorous look as well.

Inspiration: Matching Furniture to Walls

What are your thoughts on matching your upholstered pieces to upholstered walls or wallpapered walls?

I know this is an old-school design thats been around for several centuries now. This design style is very bold and can be hard to pull off but with the right fabric and wallpaper it can look breath taking. Everything seems to eventually make a comeback and you can choose to follow it or not. To be honest with you Im still iffy on whether or not I would design a room like that, this look takes guts to go over the top matchy matchy. Then again safe can be boring and I do gravitate more towards patterns and color. Maybe a guest bedroom or powder room would be a fun option to try out this look? If youre still not convinced check out these beautiful spaces that do matching of upholstered pieces to upholstered walls or wallpapered walls just right!

Check out this playful bedroom. I love the fabric in this room the headboard, wallpaper and bed skirt match tastefully. I could see this being a great bedroom for a young adult.

A great example of traditional & fresh stylish.

Love the pink and blue pattern in this space, the white sheets help tone down the colorful pattern. Image: via Thibaut Design

This is the safer option as far as the room goes with the cream & brown pattern on the canopy & walls. Im a big fan of canopy beds especially canopy beds that go all the way to the top of the ceiling.

An old school look with an edge.

House Tour: White Villa in South Africa

While doing my usual search I found a beautiful villa that was created from scratch and is located in South Africa. This beautiful villa is where the architect Minky Lidchi spends her weekends. It has a wonderful veranda and stunning walls on which the texture was kept. Yes, I just cant stop staring at the wonderful white brick walls and the the homes stylish decoration.

If theres one thing that truly stands out to me its the beautiful walls. I long to have textured walls like this. I also love the sculptures, very beautiful! What do you think?

Inspiration: Antique Orchard Ladders

Ive been seeing a lot more of these awesome antique orchard ladders being re-used and re-purposed in design. I think theres a great way to decorate your home or office with because theyre so interesting to look at. Below is a picture of antique bookcase orchard ladder I saw a couple of weeks ago at Anthropologie, I liked how they utilized the space with books and decorative pillows. This ladder is pretty large but, Ive seen smaller ones that arent as big. I found some decorative ways that people have re-used or re-purposed these orchard ladders.

The photo I took from Anthropologie, a great bookcase if you have a large wall you want to use or room separation alternative.

An old wooden ladder featured in the Aussie magazine. I like the blue they picked to paint the shelves on this rustic antique bookshelf ladder.

A DIY project from Man Made DIY. Love the multi uses a ladder night table and a small bookcase or whatever you want to display.

A ladder pot rack hung from the kitchen ceiling. Also on the plus side its space saving if youre limited on space in your kitchen.

Design blog Remodelista showcased an antique ladder propped up in this cozy living room. A nice decorative touch with a blanket hanging off it for easy and pretty storage.

A bold closet with glossy black shoe racks work wonders for displaying high heels, more up to date version of the ladder look.

A vintage farmhouse kitchen displays elegant linens & burlap towels on their vintage ladder. Also another great room is a powder room or bathroom using orchard ladders.

Perfect for displaying flowers as seen in this sun room.

There really are an endless amount of creative ways to decorating with antique ladders.

Theyve now become a priority of mine to find at the next big flea market or estate sale I go to!

Any other interesting ideas of how to use cool antique orchard ladders?

Color Watch: Cornflower Blue

A new hue Ive been particularly drawn to lately is this lovely shade of cornflower blue. Cornflower blue is a nice color for softening a space and looks gorgeous with most bright white or even more in creamy white.

Different hues of cornflower blue to help you decide which shade you lean more towards..so pretty from Design Seeds.

I personally prefer a bright white kitchen, but when I saw this kitchen I liked how pretty and unique it looks. Its definitely not your usual brown or white cabinetry thats commonly used. If I had a country house I would consider painting the cabinets a soft cornflower blue. I have to mention that these are absolutely beautiful high vaulted ceilings, just had to throw that out there.

Love the doors entering into this sweet bathroom.

Vaughan Design-Hanging Shade Brass.

Awesome looking pendant light with cornflower blue and brass, now thats one glorious looking lighting fixture.

Would you ever paint your kitchen or a room in your home cornflower blue? Or, maybe just in accent pieces? Certainly a safer option to lean more towards accent pieces such as the pendant light from Vaughan Designs.

DIY: Neon String Wrapped Vases

Neons are a big trend this year. I posted a blog post last week on ways you could incorporate neon into your home & wardrobe.

I found this fun DIY project made from these milk bottles. They were transformed into vases that are wrapped in twine with a nice touch of neon pink & yellow. They seem super easy to make! Check out more details and instructions on how to make these neon string wrapped vases from Remodelista.

Pops of Red Spice in Fashion and Home Decor

In the midst of Summer I thought I would share this post on hints of red spice as inspiration. I love red, its so bold, classic and looks good on most of us to wear.

However, in the home it can either look amazing or look horrible if it isnt designed right.

Red can come off as a bit loud or even seem a bit campy, but it has always been a favorite color of mine.

Below are a few ways that spicy red has been done tastefully in the home and as apparel.

Love these red chests in this dining room, looks so elegant and romantic with the white tufted chairs and glossy black dining table.

This spicy red blazer jacket looks amazing with the black & white striped top. Ive even been wearing this red blazer look and I love it.

A stunning hot red Valentino dress paired with red stilettos.

So pretty, with the classic lines of this red & white striped chair. Also a bold choice in gingham wallpaper but it works well in this space.

Beautiful banquet with horizontal stripes in the kitchen and red & white flooring..fun and playful.

Spice racks from Ikea were re-used as bookshelves.

All of these red frames in this hallway are different than the usual black picture frames that are commonly used in decorating. I think if the photos werent all black and white it would be harder to pull this look off using all red frames.

All in all I think red works if its done in subtle ways and doesnt go too over the top with this color. Spice red is a warm color that helps warm up a home and a classic that will always be timeless.

New Home, New WindowsNow My Drapes Are Too Short!

We just moved into a new home and I found that my bedroom drapes were a few inches too short. Oh, no! What to do? Lengthen them by adding tabs to the top, of course! So off to the fabric store I went. I cut rectangles of fabric twice the needed length plus about 2, and stitched the sides together. I drew a line 1 from one short end, marked the center of the strip about from the end, then stitched to connect the dots and form a point at the end of each tab. Then I turned them right side out and pressed them.

To apply the gimp trim to the edges, I selected my widest zigzag stitch (9 mm), attached my all-purpose dual feedfoot (BERNINA Reverse Pattern Foot 1D), and engaged the BERNINA Dual Feed on my BERNINA 830. If you dont have an 8 Series machine with Dual Feed, use a walking foot instead (BERNINA Walking Foot 50).

Stitching the trim in place with a 9 mm zigzag stitch was a snap using BERNINA Dual Feed.

No stretching, no shifting! (No ripping!)

How easy was that?!

I really love this idea, but what if you cant match the fabric? Would the trim around the edges if the tab hide the fact that the fabric might not match perfectly? Thanks for the tip!

Hi Linda, you might be able to find some trim that matched better than the fabric, and that might help the tabs blend in better. You might also look around the fabric store in other areas than home dec to find a fabric that matched more closely, like special occasion fabric or even garment fabric.
